This recognition celebrates the collaborative efforts that brought to life a nature-inspired, inclusive play space in South Philadelphia. The design thoughtfully incorporates elements that encourage graduated risk-taking, fostering resilience and confidence among children. From embankment slides to log scrambles, every aspect of the playground is crafted to be both adventurous and accessible, ensuring that everyone, regardless of ability, can engage with the space.
Spanning two acres within the historic FDR Park, the playground features towering birdhouse-like structures that pay homage to the park's rich avian habitat, and North America's largest swing set—a 20-seat megaswing that invites visitors of all ages to experience the joy of play together.
This project is a cornerstone of the broader FDR Park Plan, which aims to revitalize the park while honoring its ecological and historical significance. Receiving the ASLA Merit Award is an acknowledgment of the collective dedication to creating spaces that are both meaningful and transformative. WRT remains committed to designing environments to inspire connection, play, and promote a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
