Spanning 58 acres along the San Mateo County coast, Tunitas Creek Beach offers a rich history, stunning views, and its vast beach. To ensure safety and accessibility, and preserve the sensitive bluff landscape, and improve visitor experiences, its beauty for future visitors, improved andadditional facilities such as parking, restrooms, trails, a ranger station, and an iconic overlook are being developed.
San Mateo County Parks is collaborating with Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) and the Coastal Conservancy to safeguard environmental resources and enhance public safety at Tunitas Creek Beach. Nestled along the picturesque San Mateo coastline, this beach has long been a secluded gem, known for its steep bluffs and minimal accessibility.
In recent years, Tunitas Creek Beach has become a destination for surfers and campers, while also facing challenges from illicit activities that harm its delicate ecosystem. POST's 2017 acquisition of the 58-acre site – and subsequent transfer to the County in 2020 – aimed to address these issues by transforming it into a safe, sustainable, and accessible public park.
The project team is led by regular WRT collaborators CSW | Stuber-Stroeh Engineering Group. When it opens, the park will offer a new destination on Highway 1 while protecting sensitive environmental resources. Our team was recently on site for a construction update and captured plenty of progress photos.
Keep an eye out for the official opening of Tunitas Creek Beach toward the end of the year!
